A woman's retreat, a place of spa-like calm and serenity, where the worries of the day disappear in a foaming bath of bubbles. Well, that wasn't going to happen in THIS bathroom.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/house/092011/D30_6870.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/house/092011/D30_6870.jpg" width="426" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">After annexing the former walk-in closet and about 5' of the master bedroom, there is now room for a free-standing tub and a shower stall.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Rub-a-dub-dub, I love my tub. And the blinds also are remote-controlled Silhouettes, just like the bedroom. And yes, I can control these blinds from the bedroom. RF is awesome!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/house/092011/P1020100.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="425" src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/house/092011/P1020100.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Isn't this a fun tub filler?</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/house/092011/P1020133.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/house/092011/P1020133.jpg" width="426" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">After much hemming and hawing, I decided to go with a single long sink, rather than 2 separate sinks. There wasn't quite enough room for two sinks, and even if they were crammed in, there wouldn't be much counter space. This undermount sink is plenty long for two people to brush their teeth without spitting on each other.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/house/092011/P1020099.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/house/092011/P1020099.jpg" width="426" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">The vanity has lots of storage. Even the centre part can be used for storage, thanks to some clever design.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/house/092011/P1020112.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/house/092011/P1020112.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/house/092011/P1020113.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/house/092011/P1020113.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">The side shelves provide lots of storage for tall things.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/house/092011/P1020114.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/house/092011/P1020114.jpg" width="426" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">This faucet is *not* a puking faucet like all the others. I think it looks like a baleen whale.</div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/house/092011/P1020131.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/house/092011/P1020131.jpg" width="426" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">The wall sconces are giant diamonds. I have no idea how to change the lightbulb on these things so hopefully they never burn out.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/house/092011/P1020135.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/house/092011/P1020135.jpg" width="426" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">An invisible, yet awesome addition to any bath reno - heated floors.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/house/092011/P1020132.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/house/092011/P1020132.jpg" width="426" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">A free-standing armoire thing has the same counter top as the vanity. I think it's really pretty.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/house/092011/P1020107.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/house/092011/P1020107.jpg" width="426" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">On the bottom, I store linens.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/house/092011/P1020108.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/house/092011/P1020108.jpg" width="426" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">The middle compartments are good for things like nail polish.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/house/092011/P1020109.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/house/092011/P1020109.jpg" width="426" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">And on top, I have ... Kiehl's. And some other stuff. I need to put more stuff in here. Maybe more Kiehl's.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/house/092011/P1020110.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/house/092011/P1020110.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">And finally, the most girly shower you can imagine!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/house/092011/P1020105.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/house/092011/P1020105.jpg" width="426" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Right down to the shower door knob.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/house/092011/P1020106.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/house/092011/P1020106.jpg" width="426" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Rex says it's like being in a disco ball ... and he'd like to come out please.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/house/092011/D30_5623.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/house/092011/D30_5623.jpg" width="426" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">So there it is, another reno in the books. There is nothing left in this little house to reno. No original parts are left. No mas, fini, ca c'est tout! Except the back deck. Maybe in the spring, I can have that re-done. And the dogs said they want a pool. Just a small, above-ground one so they can stay in shape. </div>Kristihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11610438225632697524noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5441724522262748947.post-56788946749898452702011-09-04T09:46:00.000-07:002011-09-04T09:54:33.242-07:00The 2011 Reveal Part 4 - Master BedroomAnd here we are, the penultimate reveal. The impetus for this year's renovation was a desire for a bigger bathroom. In order for this to happen, I needed to annex some space from the bedroom. Let us revisit what the bedroom looked like when I moved in.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/house/092011/D30_6865.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="425" src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/house/092011/D30_6865.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/house/092011/D30_6864.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/house/092011/D30_6864.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/house/092011/D30_6868.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/house/092011/D30_6868.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div>Let the demo begin!!! And you know, while we have this wall down, we might as well ...<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-iTOd7qRFrjg/TZ1EfUAIPxI/AAAAAAAAACc/IWOV5bAkikQ/s1600/bathroom2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-iTOd7qRFrjg/TZ1EfUAIPxI/AAAAAAAAACc/IWOV5bAkikQ/s640/bathroom2.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div>Despite losing about 5' of depth, the bedroom is still plenty large. A de-flocked ceiling and crown moulding make it look all grown-up. And I love my mini-chandelier. I'm all about the lighting, yo.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/house/092011/P1020077.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/house/092011/P1020077.jpg" width="426" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/house/092011/P1020081.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/house/092011/P1020081.jpg" width="426" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">The puny walk-in closet was expropriated for the bathroom. Not to worry, nothing some built-ins can't address!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/house/092011/P1020082.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="425" src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/house/092011/P1020082.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">The window is covered in a lovely Silhouette blind. Aside from being really pretty, it's on remote control! Yes, whilst lying in the comfort of my own bed, I can wile away the hours making the blinds go up and down. Until the dogs get impatient and start jumping on me. Maybe they're jealous 'cause I won't let them play with the blinds?</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/house/092011/P1020085.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/house/092011/P1020085.jpg" width="426" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">I have a section just for denim ... and look how much more room there is! I need more denim - stat! To the outlet malls ... and beyond!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/house/092011/P1020090.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/house/092011/P1020090.jpg" width="426" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Ah, shoe heaven.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/house/092011/P1020091.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/house/092011/P1020091.jpg" width="426" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Some shoes are just a little prettier than the others.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/house/092011/P1020092.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/house/092011/P1020092.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Little dresses live here.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/house/092011/P1020095.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/house/092011/P1020095.jpg" width="426" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Tons of room for bags.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/house/092011/P1020093.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/house/092011/P1020093.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Now this is quite clever. Looks like a regular two-level closet.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/house/092011/P1020096.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/house/092011/P1020096.jpg" width="426" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">But the top rack pulls down! This is excellent for not-so-tall people.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/house/092011/P1020098.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/house/092011/P1020098.jpg" width="426" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">There's tons of room in the built-ins, so I see some serious shopping in my future. Not that I enjoy shopping, you know, but I am obligated to fill this rather massive closet. It looks funny so bare. :-)</div>Kristihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11610438225632697524noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5441724522262748947.post-85312003565629089662011-09-04T09:27:00.000-07:002011-09-04T09:30:01.368-07:00The 2011 Reveal Part 3 - OfficeAh, the joys of working from home! Especially now that I have a very spacious home office! This is the third bedroom, and it gets excellent morning light through the east-facing window.<br />
<br />
When I moved in, it was a dark red.<br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">The combination of the dark red walls and the pink/peach carpet was ... not good.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/house/092011/D30_6860.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/house/092011/D30_6860.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">The office got a fresh coat of paint, new carpet. a new light fixture (which is a smaller version of the metal ball that I have in my kitchen) and new wooden shutters.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/house/092011/P1020064.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/house/092011/P1020064.jpg" width="426" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">I added lots of bookshelves. I love my books - they are the one thing that I don't recycle immediately.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/house/092011/P1020065.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/house/092011/P1020065.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">The dogs are alarmed. You're not going to recycle *us*, are you?</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/house/092011/P1020074.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/house/092011/P1020074.jpg" width="426" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Lou says "Nah, then who will she stalk with all those cameras? Man, my chin is itchy."</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/house/092011/P1020071.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/house/092011/P1020071.jpg" width="426" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">I need some art work for this room, as well as the guest room. I have all these ideas of shooting black and white panoramic landscapes and framing them in black frames with crisp white beveled mats but I have a feeling that one day, I'll just wander down to Ikea and get some pre-framed "art". 'Cause I'm trashy like that. :-)</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/house/092011/P1020062.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/house/092011/P1020062.jpg" width="426" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />

Previously, it was a store-all room, wedged between the guest bathroom and the bedroom that is now my office. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/house/092011/D30_6855.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/house/092011/D30_6855.jpg" width="425" /></a></div><br />
With a little bit of plumbing and electrical, it is now home to my new laundry pair. Meet the girls!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/house/092011/P1020055.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/house/092011/P1020055.jpg" width="425" /></a></div><br />
I never thought I would enjoy doing laundry as much as I do now. Having the laundry room on the floor with the bedrooms is dreamy. I actively search for things to wash.<br />
<br />
A second purpose for this room is to store the Craft Corner of Shame. These are the supplies collected over the years, the remnants from a long series of failed arts and crafts projects. <br />
<br />
Here it is, looking neat and tidy.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/house/092011/P1020049.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/house/092011/P1020049.jpg" width="425" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">And here is The Craft Corner of Shame in all its glory!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/house/092011/P1020051.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/house/092011/P1020051.jpg" width="425" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">There's even enough room for a little table and my old-school sewing machine.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/house/092011/P1020054.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/house/092011/P1020054.jpg" width="425" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">In the interest of recycling, I managed to find a home for a light fixture that was displaced from downstairs. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/house/092011/P1020123.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/house/092011/P1020123.jpg" width="426" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">And again, I've allowed a bit of colour into my house. This one is a brighter acid green than the bathroom, and it's a very cheery place to do laundry. The flooring is the same large tile that looks like hardwood. A new wooden shutter and a fun light fixture and voila! It's a very happy place to do laundry.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />

When I bought the house, it was painted an alarming orange.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/house/oct_09/D30_6848.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/house/oct_09/D30_6848.jpg" width="426" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">This orange was the first thing to go when I moved in, but the room still looked shabby. Since all the other rooms were getting something, I decided that the guest room should get at least a little lipstick. In addition to new carpet (which the upper floor got, to replace the terrifying pink shag), the room got a fresh coat of paint, a new light fixture, and wooden shutters.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/house/092011/P1020129.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="425" src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/house/092011/P1020129.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Lou's bed, aka my Montauk overstuffed chair, has found a home in the guest bedroom. Lou still pops in for a nap from time to time.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/house/092011/P1020128.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/house/092011/P1020128.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div>The guest bathroom, like the rest of the original house, was blah. Builder's standard laminate countertop, faux brass booby lights, slippery tile floors, and an uninspired colour palette.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/house/092011/D30_6853.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/house/092011/D30_6853.jpg" width="424" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Oh, and this scary mirror/door thing on the shower.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/house/092011/D30_6852.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/house/092011/D30_6852.jpg" width="424" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">This room was pretty much gutted, though we left the plumbing in its original places. The flooring is now a large, dark brown tile that looks a lot like the hardwood that's downstairs. The walls were painted a soft green (Colour! In my house!!!), and some blingy wall sconces flank the mirror above the new vanity with a pretty quartz top.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/house/092011/P1020040.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/house/092011/P1020040.jpg" width="425" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/house/092011/P1020042.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="425" src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/house/092011/P1020042.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">My obsession with puking faucets continues.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/house/092011/P1020119.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/house/092011/P1020119.jpg" width="426" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">The shower/tub was redone with a super-deep tub and some fancy tile work to jazz up the oversized subway tiles.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/house/092011/P1020121.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/house/092011/P1020121.jpg" width="426" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">It's now a cute, cozy guest bath. I'm glad I opted to give it a facelift.</div>Kristihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11610438225632697524noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5441724522262748947.post-12698631138943900192011-05-03T22:35:00.000-07:002011-05-03T22:41:50.136-07:00Roughing It<div style="text-align: center;"><div style="text-align: left;">Well, the electrical and plumbing has been roughed-in, the drywall is done, and I think (hope!) that the fun stuff, like heated floors, tiles, and pretty lights, will start showing up.</div></div><div style="text-align: center;"><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div></div><div style="text-align: center;"><div style="text-align: left;">Oh, and did I mention the custom closets??? Yes, they will be all white and pretty, but loaded with function. Here is the sweater/shoe closet. And yes, I have mad drafting skills.</div></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-IT331YsLf0E/TcDhZVX4p9I/AAAAAAAAAC0/hjsRVzL1HJ0/s1600/shoe-closet.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-IT331YsLf0E/TcDhZVX4p9I/AAAAAAAAAC0/hjsRVzL1HJ0/s1600/shoe-closet.JPG" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">On the other side of the bathroom entrance is where the hanging stuff goes. The top rack of the two-level hanger system has a pull-down so that I can access that stuff (I'm not that tall).</div><div style="text-align: center;"><div style="text-align: left;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-etd_hSxRwoM/TcDhfgVeKMI/AAAAAAAAADM/dZqeK-ZB3b8/s1600/tall-wardrobe.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-etd_hSxRwoM/TcDhfgVeKMI/AAAAAAAAADM/dZqeK-ZB3b8/s1600/tall-wardrobe.JPG" /></a></div></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Under the window is a built-in dresser. It's huge!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ZDm8JpMIQo0/TcDin1lVmzI/AAAAAAAAADg/-gS7-Y70_t0/s1600/side-window.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ZDm8JpMIQo0/TcDin1lVmzI/AAAAAAAAADg/-gS7-Y70_t0/s1600/side-window.JPG" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">The entrance to the bathroom will have some sort of pretty pendant to light the way. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-jLQaICuvdRo/TcDhfJBpfLI/AAAAAAAAADI/5ecVpiuyu4M/s1600/bathroom-entrance.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-jLQaICuvdRo/TcDhfJBpfLI/AAAAAAAAADI/5ecVpiuyu4M/s1600/bathroom-entrance.JPG" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">It's kinda hard to envision a pretty shower, given its cluttered state but ... once the tile and stuff goes in (and all the tools leave!) this will be a nice shower. Frameless glass, big rainhead shower fixture hanging from the ceiling ... good thing I got a new hot water heater - I think I will be spending a lot of time in the shower.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-fRrNwS6yAqg/TcDhd1ulBKI/AAAAAAAAAC4/0zPANUaIdO8/s1600/shower.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-fRrNwS6yAqg/TcDhd1ulBKI/AAAAAAAAAC4/0zPANUaIdO8/s1600/shower.JPG" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">And if I don't use all the hot water showering, then maybe I'll use it up filling my tub. It will be positioned under the window, and there will even be a chandelier over the tub.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-6qq9jQKvSEQ/TcDhe_a7GII/AAAAAAAAADE/CN6F7nUhzrg/s1600/tub-window.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-6qq9jQKvSEQ/TcDhe_a7GII/AAAAAAAAADE/CN6F7nUhzrg/s1600/tub-window.JPG" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">And I figured while they were working in the bathroom, they might as well install a skylight. I love Holly's skylight in her bathroom, so I knew I had to have one when I did a reno.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-jfUbntUAfL4/TcDhesuhqgI/AAAAAAAAADA/kmajL6xfc-k/s1600/skylight.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-jfUbntUAfL4/TcDhesuhqgI/AAAAAAAAADA/kmajL6xfc-k/s1600/skylight.JPG" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">And skylights can leak ... unless you install it in conjunction with a new roof. The older roof was kind of brown, with plenty of moss for accent. I like how the black roof looks.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-APJhajMooUE/TcDhg9E1YkI/AAAAAAAAADc/nL2359JZfgI/s1600/windows.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-APJhajMooUE/TcDhg9E1YkI/AAAAAAAAADc/nL2359JZfgI/s1600/windows.JPG" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">During the last reno, a dormer was added to the front to give it some character. However, it looked kinda weird, like it was suspended.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-9tDE9iY8zxQ/TcDlIB5-SMI/AAAAAAAAADk/T_v9b9hLHPU/s1600/front-house.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-9tDE9iY8zxQ/TcDlIB5-SMI/AAAAAAAAADk/T_v9b9hLHPU/s400/front-house.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">So they added some pillars in matching brick to anchor the whole thing. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-rps6w6rixUE/TcDhgXAJM6I/AAAAAAAAADY/K0OlHgWA4lo/s1600/pillars.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-rps6w6rixUE/TcDhgXAJM6I/AAAAAAAAADY/K0OlHgWA4lo/s1600/pillars.JPG" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">And just because they're pretty ... my tulips are out!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-pG5ERfelYmI/TcDheaUbXtI/AAAAAAAAAC8/RBN5WmExlFA/s1600/tulips.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-pG5ERfelYmI/TcDheaUbXtI/AAAAAAAAAC8/RBN5WmExlFA/s1600/tulips.JPG" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;"><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div></div><div style="text-align: center;"><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div></div><div style="text-align: center;"><div style="text-align: left;">I hope that I will have prettier pics to share in the next week or so. There's a lot of bling-y stuff in my garage right now. It will look even nicer when it's installed. :-)</div></div><div style="text-align: center;"><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div>Kristihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11610438225632697524noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5441724522262748947.post-27876258470826011662011-04-14T00:08:00.000-07:002011-04-14T00:08:44.928-07:00Picking the prettyThe last week has been spent picking out materials for the bathrooms, and signing off on the cabinets and vanity designs. I'm pleased to report that decisions have been made!<br />
<br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">Master Bath</span><br />
The master bath is (predictably) going to be white and sparkly, and (hopefully) spa-like.<br />
<br />
The free-standing tub will look something like this.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://content.costco.ca/Images/Content/Product/252390c.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://content.costco.ca/Images/Content/Product/252390c.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br />
<br />
Wall sconces (the crystal doo-dad is a lot whiter than this photo suggests).<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.artcraftlighting.com/images/products/AC419.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://www.artcraftlighting.com/images/products/AC419.jpg" width="236" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Decided to go with a single sink. This one is 30" long, so two people easily could brush their teeth at the same time without spitting on each other's head. I think. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.ca.kohler.com/onlinecatalog/300x350/faa22462.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://www.ca.kohler.com/onlinecatalog/300x350/faa22462.jpg" width="341" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">The vanity is a custom piece that will be (duh) white. It also will float on the wall, which will make the dog hair easier to sweep. :-)</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">From a materials point of view, the floor tiles are dark brown, with the look of wood grain. Sadly, this doesn't photograph well, so just picture dark wood but in tile.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Maybe this photographs better. At the top of the photo is the coolest accent tile. We will use this big bubble motif as an accent in the shower. Below it, looking a bit like crushed crystal, is another accent tile that also will be used as the tile in the shower stall. At the bottom is the countertop (which might be marble, or it might be granite - this requires further investigation). And the big white tile in the background is ... the big white tile that we will install in some sort of brick pattern in the shower.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-MxgqmzMmAwo/TaaX0nhR7RI/AAAAAAAAACo/sA5HmkFAshI/s1600/master-materials-close-portrait.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-MxgqmzMmAwo/TaaX0nhR7RI/AAAAAAAAACo/sA5HmkFAshI/s640/master-materials-close-portrait.JPG" width="472" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ZxEsNUe_v1I/TaaXfT-m7DI/AAAAAAAAACk/u7_k_BuG7Nw/s1600/master-materials-close.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ZxEsNUe_v1I/TaaXfT-m7DI/AAAAAAAAACk/u7_k_BuG7Nw/s400/master-materials-close.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">And in a rare burst of colour, a nice botanical fabric will be used for curtain panels on the window behind the tub.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-SFohfQaOPgg/TaaY0rl3GhI/AAAAAAAAACs/u1smmVQuY-w/s1600/materials-collage.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-SFohfQaOPgg/TaaY0rl3GhI/AAAAAAAAACs/u1smmVQuY-w/s400/materials-collage.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">Guest Bathroom</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">The guest bath will be light and sparkly too. The countertop is a quartz with lots of little iridescent sparkly bits. The grooved subway tile looks a lot like the tile in the kitchen - white with a bamboo texture. The little mosaic marble bars will be used as accent.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;"><br />
</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-_tWUEllx4I0/TaaZdKAzmLI/AAAAAAAAACw/sdF4vY6d-8k/s1600/guest-bath-materials-2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-_tWUEllx4I0/TaaZdKAzmLI/AAAAAAAAACw/sdF4vY6d-8k/s400/guest-bath-materials-2.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">The wall sconces are nice and shiny too.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.faucetdirect.com/imagebase/resized/330x320/artcraftlightingimages/ac679bn.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="387" src="http://www.faucetdirect.com/imagebase/resized/330x320/artcraftlightingimages/ac679bn.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">The vanity will be custom built and will be a fairly standard 48" wide, white one with lots of storage. The faucet is what I fondly refer to as "the puking water kind".</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.pfisterfaucets.com/www/ImageAssets/mirror/model/bath/vega/vegf042-vg/f-042-vgcc/f-042-vgcc-rct-c1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="310" src="http://www.pfisterfaucets.com/www/ImageAssets/mirror/model/bath/vega/vegf042-vg/f-042-vgcc/f-042-vgcc-rct-c1.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">So that's most of it. The electrician is first up, as he needs to rough in the myriad lights for this reno. He also will advise whether placing a chandelier over a bathtub is "to code". Seriously, what could be the danger of putting a large pendant light fixture over a steaming tub of water?</div>Kristihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11610438225632697524noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5441724522262748947.post-72301861758267710712011-04-06T22:12:00.000-07:002011-04-06T22:25:48.892-07:00It's ON!!!!You knew it was coming. And now that spring is here, my thoughts have turned to a master bath reno. And you know, while that wall is open ...<br />
<br />
In order to make the bathroom big enough for a free-standing tub and a decent sized shower, the wall had to be moved out about 4 feet.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ZkcSk_qtZLY/TZ1EfzRiU6I/AAAAAAAAACg/_WPU6BvJQls/s1600/bathroom1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ZkcSk_qtZLY/TZ1EfzRiU6I/AAAAAAAAACg/_WPU6BvJQls/s640/bathroom1.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br />
This meant that the original window in the bedroom needed to be replaced with a smaller one, and then a second window was added to the bathroom, to give some balance to the exterior of the house. The free-standing tub will go on this wall, and we'll hang a little chandelier over the tub to give it some bling. Because you can never have enough chandeliers.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-iTOd7qRFrjg/TZ1EfUAIPxI/AAAAAAAAACc/IWOV5bAkikQ/s1600/bathroom2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-iTOd7qRFrjg/TZ1EfUAIPxI/AAAAAAAAACc/IWOV5bAkikQ/s640/bathroom2.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">The little walk-in closet was annexed to make room for the shower. It's going to be a good-sized shower too - hexagonal and about 4' by 3' by whatever measurement that long piece is between the two sides. <makes area="" for="" formula="" google="" hexagon="" like="" note="" or="" something="" that="" to=""></makes></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-hlU0m0ecvEo/TZ1Eee1ahsI/AAAAAAAAACU/ctdqnP3jXGg/s1600/bathroom4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-hlU0m0ecvEo/TZ1Eee1ahsI/AAAAAAAAACU/ctdqnP3jXGg/s400/bathroom4.jpg" width="300" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">So there it is, in its gutted glory. The scope of the master bath reno involves:</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"></div><ul><li>Creating larger overall space</li>
<li>Installing large custom vanity with deep trough sink and natural stone top</li>
<li>New flooring with heated undermats</li>
<li>Installing custom shower with built in shelving and multiple shower heads</li>
<li>Installing free-standing tub</li>
<li>Subway tiles where required</li>
<li>Recessed lighting</li>
<li>Chandelier over tub</li>
<li>Sconces flanking mirror</li>
<li>New mirror</li>
<li>Installing a skylight (and what the heck, let's do a new roof while you're up there)</li>
<li>New toilet (because even toilets can be pretty)</li>
</ul><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Of course, when you remove a girl's walk-in closet, that must be addressed too. To that end, then, the scope of the master bedroom reno involves:</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"></div><ul><li>Custom closets and built-ins for clothes and shoe storage</li>
<li>New carpet</li>
<li>Smooth the ceiling (because flocked ceilings should be illegal)</li>
<li>New chandelier</li>
<li>New light fixture near entrance to bathroom</li>
<li>Recessed lighting</li>
<li>Bed solution for Lou (seriously - his Big Chair might not fit in the new bedroom)</li>
</ul><div>I'm working with the same great team that did last year's reno, and I'm confident we'll achieve the same great results. We've finished selecting most materials, and work should begin very soon.</div><br />

<br />
<div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; text-align: left;"><b>BEFORE</b>: It was a standard 10x10 kitchen that was built in 1993 and changed not a jot since then.</div></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; text-align: left;"><img src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/reno/082010/D30_6880.jpg" /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; text-align: left;"><br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; text-align: left;"><b>AFTER</b>: What can I say - it's my dream kitchen. Tons of cabinets, new appliances, lots of lighting.... oh, and the popcorn ceiling is gone!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; text-align: left;"><img src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/reno/082010/P1010405.jpg" /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; text-align: left;">I am insanely in love with my fridge.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; text-align: left;"><img src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/reno/082010/P1010412.jpg" /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; text-align: left;">The backsplash is a large subway tile with a texture sort of like bamboo. I think it goes nicely with the dark granite counter tops.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; text-align: left;"><img src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/reno/082010/P1010410.jpg" /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; text-align: left;"><br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; text-align: left;">The counter top kicks out to make a little breakfast bar (and an excellent place for kneading dough and other large-scale pastry activities).</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; text-align: left;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; text-align: left;"><img height="400" src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/reno/082010/P1010421.jpg" width="600" /></div><div><br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; text-align: left;">I use this bank of cabinets as sort of a sideboard right now.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; text-align: left;"><img src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/reno/082010/P1010456.jpg" /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; text-align: left;"><br />

I love the results, and I can't wait for the next one. Wait ... next one? Nah, I think I'll live with things just as they are for a while. Except the master bath. How hard can it be to change the tub? And add a walk-in shower? And double vanity? Just a little renovation, probably won't take more than a month ....</div></div></div>Kristihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11610438225632697524noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5441724522262748947.post-39235104934281439902010-08-17T12:54:00.000-07:002010-08-17T12:54:03.743-07:00The Reveal, Part 1<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">It has been brought to my attention that I never showed the "after" shots of my renovation. I had a new garden bed dug in the front yard. This serves two purposes:<br />
<ol><li>gives me more room to indulge my plant-buying habit, and;</li>
<li>reduces the amount of weedwhacking that I have to do, since despite my Japanese heritage, I've proven shockingly inept at operating said machine.</li>
</ol>This bed is south-facing and safe (mostly) from rampaging collies (though Rex has tried to run through it in a fit of puppy ridiculousness).<br />
<br />
<img src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/reno/062010/P1000841.jpg" /><br />
<br />
What's that? Why yes, I *did* get a new fence. Thanks for noticing! Everything else was looking so nice, I couldn't have that old, creaky fence bringing the whole yard down.<br />
<img src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/reno/062010/P1000837.jpg" /><br />
<img src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/reno/062010/P1000838.jpg" /><br />
<br />
Let us flash back to October 09 when I first spied this lovely property.<br />
<img src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/house/oct_09/D30_6898.jpg" /><br />
<img src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/house/oct_09/D30_6886.jpg" /><br />
<br />
I am very pleased with the yard now. I just wish Bear could have seen it. That dog loved to lounge on the grass - this would have been paradise for him.<br />
<br />
Shout out to Bear!<br />
<img height="400" src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/bear/bear_grass2.jpg" width="600" /><br />
<br />
OK, back to the roses. This is a hybrid tea rose called Memorial Day.<br />
<img src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/reno/062010/P1000851.jpg" /><br />
<img src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/reno/062010/P1000844.jpg" /><br />
<br />
And this is a shrub rose called Lavender Meidiland.<br />
<img src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/reno/062010/P1000846.jpg" /><br />
<br />
A rambling landscaping rose called Glacier Magic.<br />
<img src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/reno/062010/P1000780.jpg" /><br />
<img src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/reno/062010/P1000849.jpg" /><br />
<br />
Also in the garden is something called a Bonica Shrub Rose (which is still in bud and thus not worthy of a photo op), a climbing rose called Brite Eyes (too shadowy to take a pic) and a Crested Moss Rose (planted after pics were taken). There's also a French Lilac, some marigolds, and a bunch of petunias in that bed. Yet there is still lots of room for me to indulge my plant-buying addiction.<br />
<br />
The vegetable garden continues to thrive. <br />
<img src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/reno/062010/P1000781.jpg" /><br />
<br />
The swiss chard and the lettuce are growing at a rate that outpaces consumption. I may start leaving little bags of chard and/or lettuce on the car seats of strangers.<br />
<img src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/reno/062010/P1000785.jpg" /><br />
<br />
I don't know what possessed me to plant so many cabbages.<br />
<img src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/reno/062010/P1000784.jpg" /><br />
<br />
So far, I've spied 4 little tomatoes on the plants that I thought for sure would be dead by now.<br />
<img src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/reno/062010/P1000783.jpg" /><br />
<br />
I've also got a couple teeny-tiny cukes, some peppers, and a few peas. This gardening thing is fun!<br />
<br />
On the renovation front, I am just waiting for the tile guys to install the backsplash, and then I'm done! I've really enjoyed the renovation process, and overall I'm really pleased with how it went. <br />
<br />
Now about that master bathroom ... :-)Kristihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11610438225632697524noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5441724522262748947.post-3666098371513010692010-06-01T19:10:00.000-07:002010-06-01T19:12:18.734-07:00Counter ContentmentThe counters are here in all their steely-grey granite glory! <br />

<br />
I think that I can use this little bump-out as a small breakfast bar.<br />
<img src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/reno/062010/P1000753.jpg"><br />
<br />
The installation took the better part of a day, and not the least of which because a certain dog convinced the installation guys to play ball with her <i><b>every frickin' half hour!</i></b><br />
<br />
If you don't throw the ball, I will haunt your dreams and suck your will to live.<br />
<img src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/reno/062010/P1000770.jpg"><br />
<br />
Despite the yucky rainy weather of the last few days, the garden continues to plug along. The strawberries haven't been eaten by the birds yet.<br />
<img src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/reno/062010/P1000764.jpg"><br />
<br />
The mint is, as predicted, plotting to take over the world. I think a few pitchers of mojitos should quell its world-domination urges.<br />
<img src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/reno/062010/P1000765.jpg"><br />
<br />
I've never attempted to grow potatoes before, but when Susan offered me some seed potatoes, how could I say no?<br />
<img src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/reno/062010/P1000755.jpg"><br />
<br />
The cabbage and spinach are plugging along.<br />
<img src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/reno/062010/P1000757.jpg"><br />
<br />
The mesclun mix is pretty much ready to pick.<br />
<img src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/reno/062010/P1000759.jpg"><br />
<br />
Another week or two and I should have enough Swiss Chard to, um, make something. In the meantime, isn't it pretty?<br />
<img src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/reno/062010/P1000761.jpg"><br />
<br />
The shelling peas are taking their time.<br />
<img src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/reno/062010/P1000762.jpg"><br />
<br />
Tomorrow, the kitchen faucet, garburator, range hood and dishwasher will be installed, which leaves only the backsplash and some odds and sods on the to-do list. 5 months and an undisclosed amount of money later, my ugly little house is looking pretty slick!Kristihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11610438225632697524noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5441724522262748947.post-38636779612359461702010-05-12T20:17:00.000-07:002010-05-12T20:18:58.248-07:00A DIY dayAs inspirational as I find all those DIY shows, I also am huge on instant gratification. But every now and again, I get an urge to build something. And that something generally is from IKEA, which is designed for faux-renovators such as myself.<br />
<br />
Today's project: a patio set.<br />
<br />
First, size up the job. I can't believe I got that thing into my van!<br />
<img src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/reno/052010/P1000735.jpg"><br />
<br />
Commence <i>mise en place</i>. For the purposes of furniture assembly, <i>mise </i>is putting things that look kinda alike together.<br />
<img src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/reno/052010/P1000736.jpg"><br />
<br />
First up - the table. Breathtakingly simple, cause it's only six pieces. Win!<br />
<img src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/reno/052010/P1000737.jpg"><br />
<br />
And now that I have a table, I can use it for more building. Here's the two-seater bench. That took a little longer, in large part because I made a mistake on step 1 and didn't realize it til step 14.<br />
<img src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/reno/052010/P1000738.jpg"><br />
<br />
And the two chairs were a snap. So here's the set!<br />
<img src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/reno/052010/P1000740.jpg"><br />
<br />
And just because everything's cuter with collies.<br />
<img src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/reno/052010/P1000742.jpg" height=400 width=600><br />
<br />
The reason I went to IKEA in the first place is because I had to exchange a too-big microwave for a just-right one at Midland Appliances and they're a tantalizing 2 blocks from IKEA.<br />
<img src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/reno/052010/P1000728.jpg"><br />
<br />
In other news, the plumber installed the toilet in the powder room. If a toilet can be cute, this one is kinda cute.<br />
<img src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/reno/052010/P1000729.jpg"><br />
<br />
Another cheeky light fixture, this time in the powder room.<br />
<img src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/reno/052010/P1000732.jpg"><br />
<br />
And a whimsical pair of sconces will flank the sink.<br />
<img src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/reno/052010/P1000734.jpg"><br />
<br />
Tomorrow, the plumber will (hopefully) finish the pedestal sink and maybe hook up the dishwasher and the water line to the fridge. I don't have a firm ETA on the rest, but my first houseguest is coming tomorrow. Nicki, we have booze, ice, and a microwave. I think we can make this work!Kristihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11610438225632697524noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5441724522262748947.post-38140243362443703092010-05-11T13:03:00.000-07:002010-05-11T13:03:07.240-07:00I think I am in love with my fridgeIt's wrong to be dazzled by shiny stainless steel. I should be better than that. Who cares if it has a kajillion shelves and drawers - it's just an appliance, right? So why do I keep trying to hug my fridge?<br />
<br />
I lurve my fridge.<br />
<img src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/reno/052010/P1000723.jpg"><br />
<img src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/reno/052010/P1000720.jpg"><br />
<br />
If you look closely, you can see the hug marks I left on my new <strike>boyfriend</strike> fridge.<br />
<img src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/reno/052010/P1000719.jpg"><br />
<br />
The other appliances are here too, and I'm sure I'll be trying to spoon the range, once it's installed. Even with all of the packing film and styrofoam I can tell that it's one sexy range.<br />
<br />
I love my new metallic snowball pendant lamp too!<br />
<img src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/reno/052010/P1000718.jpg"><br />
<br />
And once I get all the blingy crystals hung on the linear chandelier, I think I'll love it too.<br />
<img src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/reno/052010/P1000725.jpg"><br />
<br />
I like how the dining area looks. In fact, I love the whole look of the place. The dark floors, the light cabinets, the shiny stainless - it's like living in Kits, but just a lot father from the beach. :-)<br />
<img src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/reno/052010/P1000724.jpg"><br />
<br />
Wick says that I really need to get a life. In lieu of that, I should throw the ball for her.<br />
<img src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/reno/052010/P1000727.jpg">Kristihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11610438225632697524noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5441724522262748947.post-86553185830494800412010-05-04T17:30:00.000-07:002010-05-04T17:31:45.132-07:00Cabinets!Well, the cabinets are mostly in. I can finally envision what the kitchen is going to look like!<br />
<br />
This is sort of like a built-in hutch (and booze cabinet):<br />
<img src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/reno/052010/P1000700.jpg"><br />
<br />
I've got a lot of storage!<br />
<img src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/reno/052010/P1000699.jpg" height=450 width =600><br />
<br />
<img src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/reno/052010/P1000706.jpg" height=450 width =600><br />
<br />
The lighting is being installed Friday. Picture a pretty little pendant lamp over the sink.<br />
<img src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/reno/052010/P1000701.jpg" height=450 width=600><br />
<br />
The appliances arrive on Monday. Until then, I will have to imagine their stainless steel loveliness:<br />
<img src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/reno/052010/P1000703.jpg"><br />
<br />
My favourite part of the kitchen - the open shelving for all my cookbooks!<br />
<img src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/reno/052010/P1000705.jpg"> <br />
<br />
Tomorrow, the flooring installation starts. It's an engineered oak that should hold up well to dog claws (read: somewhat pre-distressed):<br />
<img src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/reno/052010/P1000708.jpg" height=450 width =600><br />
<br />
Huh. I think it's going to rain. Poor veggies.<br />
<img src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/reno/052010/P1000710.jpg"><br />
<br />
A border collie totem pole. :-)<br />

Thank goodness for Lee Valley's <a href"http://www.leevalley.com/en/garden/page.aspx?cat=2,42551&p=10259">nifty nail brush</a>! I am following the garden design methodology of "See it, buy it, plant it". It's a very disciplined way of planning a garden.<br />
<br />
One of the gardens in the backyard (graced by Wick):<br />
<img src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/reno/042010/P1000680.jpg" width=600 height=400><br />
<br />
Rex and some azaleas:<br />
<img src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/reno/042010/P1000682.jpg" width=600 height=400><br />
<br />
The other garden bed in the backyard:<br />
<img src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/reno/042010/P1000681.jpg" width=600 height=400><br />
<br />
The front yard garden bed (this needs a lot of work):<br />
<img src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/reno/042010/P1000684.jpg" width=600 height=200><br />
<br />
Speaking of the front, the door got its first coat of paint. I really like how it's starting to look. A couple more coats and some new hardware and it will look pretty spiffy.<br />
<img src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/reno/042010/P1000683.jpg" width=600 height=400><br />
<br />
The herb section of the veggie garden:<br />
<img src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/reno/042010/P1000685.jpg" width=600 height=400><br />
<br />
The middle bed:<br />
<img src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/reno/042010/P1000688.jpg" width=600 height=400><br />
<br />
The third bed. I'm pretty sure all the things (except for the herbs) have been planted way too early, but it's just so much fun!<br />
<img src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/reno/042010/P1000689.jpg" width=600 height=400><br />
<br />
The cabinets are about 60% installed. They should finish the job by Monday or Tuesday, and then the flooring guys will do their thing. The first couple coats of paint are done, and the baseboards and casings have been painted (they'll be installed after the floors are laid). Appliances are scheduled to arrive on May 10th. Oh, good gravy, I think it's almost done! Hurrah!Kristihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11610438225632697524noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5441724522262748947.post-77805362176190115122010-04-20T20:44:00.000-07:002010-04-20T20:44:49.689-07:00Drywall deployedWell, it looks like the construction bit is nearing the end and we're heading into the finishing bit! The drywall is in! The drywall is in!<br />
<br />
<img src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/reno/042010/P1000664.jpg" height=600 width=400><br />
<img src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/reno/042010/P1000661.jpg" height=600 width=400><br />
<br />
The powder room is very powdery.<br />
<img src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/reno/042010/P1000662.jpg" height=600 width=400><br />
<br />
The front door project (replacing ugly double doors with nice single door, moving doorway out 3', adding gable roof) looks to be about done. The last bit was the concrete step, which they poured on Friday.<br />
<img src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/reno/042010/P1000657.jpg" height=600 width=400><br />
<br />
We've selected the colours too. The main colour is called Water Cracker, which is a soft, chalky beige. The trim is Simply White, a, um, fairly simple white. The powder room is a deep chocolate taupe called Estate, and the front door will be Galaxy, a rich aubergine which I think will look nice against all the beige that is the front of my house.<br />
<br />
The gardening is coming along too. I have put solar lights (thanks, Rose!) to mark the preferred lie that the dogs should strive to take upon exiting onto the yard. Lou's chosen path is in red, Wick's in blue (good girl!) and Rex's in yellow. Le sigh. The boys like to kick out, while Wick is a straight-up-the-middle kind of girl.<br />
<img src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/reno/042010/P1000644.jpg"><br />
<br />
One of my favourite rituals is the too-early-planting of the tomato plants. Introducing the doomed-to-die class of 2010!<br />
<img src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/reno/042010/P1000648.jpg"><br />
<br />
Us city folks is too dumb to realize that we is planting our tomatoes upside-down.<br />
<img src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/reno/042010/P1000652.jpg"><br />
<br />
The strawberries are almost ready for the crows to eat them.<br />
<img src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/reno/042010/P1000656.jpg"><br />
<br />
And the mint is segregated in its own container (thanks, Lisa, for the tip!). Hopefully this will cut down on mojito costs this summer.<br />
<img src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/reno/042010/P1000653.jpg">Kristihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11610438225632697524noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5441724522262748947.post-58748590318143818372010-04-06T19:09:00.000-07:002010-04-06T19:09:09.919-07:00Not much to updateWell, the main floor still looks about the same. All of the electrical will be done by the end of this week, and hopefully they will start on the drywall. The cabinets have been made and are just waiting for the house to be ready. :-)<br />
<br />
The front door work is almost done. Some siding, a bit of paint, and some stairs and we'll be good to go. Oh, and lights. I get to buy lights.<br />
<img src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/reno/042010/P1000614.jpg"><br />
<br />
The siding is almost back on the house. Outdoor lighting has been roughed in. I might even be able to use my patio by summer!<br />
<img src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/reno/042010/P1000610.jpg"><br />
<br />
Since I have done absolutely nothing myself to date, I have decided that I am going to do the landscape design. I have no game plan. I have a feeling that, by fall, I will have the whole thing ripped out and re-done by someone who has a clue. Until then, I'm having a good time making weekly trips to the local gardening centers.<br />
<br />
Wick, you weren't going to dig in my new garden, were you?<br />
<img src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/reno/042010/P1000611.jpg"><br />
<br />
Good girl.<br />
<img src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/reno/042010/P1000612.jpg"><br />
<br />
Wick thinks we're going to have to buy a lot more plants to fill the small garden.<br />
<img src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/reno/042010/P1000609.jpg"><br />
<br />
I found out that dogs like bone meal. <duh> Even a perfect, split-faced dog can be lured to the dark side by bone meal. Here are the boys pretending that they didn't just dig up my newly-planted rose bush.<br />
<img src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/reno/042010/P1000608.jpg">Kristihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11610438225632697524noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5441724522262748947.post-22328950686999957112010-03-28T12:54:00.000-07:002010-03-28T13:02:07.895-07:00The green, green grass of homeThe lawn is in! My giant sandbox/beach volleyball court/kitty litter box is no longer! Hurrah!<br />
<br />
When I bought the house, the lawn looked like this:<br />
<img src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/house/oct_09/D30_6886.jpg" height="400" width="600"><br />
<br />
Then it got worse.<br />
<img src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/house/nov_09/P1000146.jpg" height="400" width="600"><br />
<br />
And then just weird.<br />
<img src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/reno/022010/yard_long.jpg" height="400" width="600"><br />
<br />
But now, it's quite gorgeous.<br />
<img src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/reno/032010/P1000591.jpg" height="600" width="400"><br />
<br />
My soon-to-be-vegetable garden is one of my fave things.<br />
<img src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/reno/032010/P1000593.jpg" height="400" width="600"><br />
<br />
The irrigation system is fully functional now.<br />
<img src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/reno/032010/P1000564.jpg" height="400" width="600"><br />
<br />
Good thing it's programmed to come on at 4:30 a.m. because at least one of my dogs is rather obsessed with sprinklers.<br />
<img src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/reno/032010/P1000565.jpg" height="400" width="600"><br />
<img src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/reno/032010/P1000568.jpg" height="400" width="600"><br />
<img src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/reno/032010/P1000579.jpg" height="400" width="600"><br />
<img src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/reno/032010/P1000574.jpg" height="600" width="600"><br />
<img src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/reno/032010/P1000576.jpg" height="600" width="600"><br />
<img src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/reno/032010/P1000582.jpg" height="400" width="600"><br />
<img src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/reno/032010/P1000583.jpg" height="400" width="600"><br />
<br />
The windows in the front room are in. It's going to be very nice to have all that natural light in the house.<br />
<img src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/reno/032010/P1000590.jpg" height=400 width=600><br />
<br />
At the front of the house, the new door has been installed. By moving the front door out about 3', the foyer is a lot more open now. I think I'm going to paint the door either a deep burgundy or perhaps an aubergine. It's definitely going to be a bright door, whatever colour I choose!<br />
<img src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/reno/032010/P1000596.jpg" height=400 width=600><br />
<br />
For reference, it used to look like this:<br />
<img src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/house/oct_09/D30_6828.jpg" height=400 width=600><br />
<br />
On the inside, the demo is pretty much done.<br />
<img src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/reno/032010/P1000602.jpg" height=600 width=400><br />
<br />
The big change is the removal of the wall that separated the kitchen from the dining room. Now the whole area will flow as my giant, gorgeous, perfect kitchen. :-)<br />
<img src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/reno/032010/P1000603.jpg" height=400 width=600><br />

What it used to look like:<br />

<br />
The dining room area will be moved to the back of the house, where the fireplace is.<br />

I really like them - in fact, I really am loving my patio.<br />
<img src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/reno/032010/P1000531.jpg" height=400 width =600><br />
<br />
There will be a couple of flower beds surrounding the patio. Hank the Rock was joined by a new friend: Mr. Inukshuk. I want to buy a podium from the 2010 Olympics (so I literally can own the podium) but I think they will be pretty spendy. So as a consolation, my awesome landscapers made me the inukshuk from leftover cedar post bits. :-)<br />

<br />
At the far end of the yard, where the bamboo used to be, I now have three small garden planter things. I am going to plant veggies, though I do not actually eat veg. But I didn't know what else to do with this odd little space so I opted for these planter box things.<br />
<img src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/reno/032010/P1000529.jpg" height=400 width=600><br />
<br />
It's been kinda rainy lately.<br />

<br />
This week, the turf will go in. NO MORE SAND - yay!! On the inside, the demolition will begin in earnest. The interior walls between the kitchen and dining room, and between the dining room and living room will be removed, as will the floors (including the super-slippery tile.). The front door should be replaced in the next week or so, which should change dramatically the look of my weird little house. After that - new dark floors, cabinets, appliances, to-die-for countertops ... so excited!Kristihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11610438225632697524noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5441724522262748947.post-2534839213640664762010-03-09T19:47:00.000-08:002010-03-09T19:47:05.057-08:00All I need are some patio lanternsExcept for a little bit of work to finish the stairs, the patio is done. I think it looks great and will look even nicer once there's some grass and flower beds, and of course, Hank has been moved into position.<br />

Leaky condo!!! Oh wait. I don't live in a condo anymore. :-( <br />

The front of the house is getting a face-lift. Sort of like botox for houses.<br />

Thus, I've ordered the <a href="http://www.geappliances.ca/jsp/ge_Features.jsp?model_id=55329&product_id=23&cmb_Brands=---&cmb_Colours=---&cmb_496=---&cmb_565=---&cmb_PriceMax=---&cmb_PriceMin=---&count=&x=&y=" target="new">GE Cafe dishwasher</a>, based largely on the fact that you can load it up with an entire bottle of dishwashing detergent and it will dispense the right amount each time. <br />

Specifically, appliance shopping. Even more specifically, sleek, stainless, gorgeous, make-you-drool appliance shopping.<br />
<br />
Accompanied by deal guy extraordinaire, Chad, it was off to Midland Appliances in Richmond. After drooling over Viking, Sub-Zero, Wolf, et. al., we decided on appliances that would not exceed the appraised value of the house.<br />
<br />
To whit, I present to you ... the appliances.<br />
<br />
First off, the duel-fuel range, a <a href="http://www.geappliances.ca/jsp/ge_Features.jsp?model_id=56769&product_id=6&cmb_Brands=---&cmb_Colours=---&cmb_496=---&cmb_565=---&cmb_PriceMax=---&cmb_PriceMin=---&count=&x=&y=" target="new">GE Cafe 4 burner</a> with a griddle in the centre, and a lower baking oven.<br />
<a href="http://s19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/reno/032010/?action=view¤t=photo.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/reno/032010/photo.jpg" border="0" height="600" width="400"></a><br />
<br />
The fridge is also a <a href="http://www.geappliances.ca/jsp/ge_Features.jsp?model_id=59109&product_id=15&cmb_Brands=---&cmb_Colours=---&cmb_496=---&cmb_565=---&cmb_PriceMax=---&cmb_PriceMin=---&count=&x=&y=" target="new">GE Cafe</a>. French doors, bottom-mount freezer, lots of bells and whistles.<br />
<a href="http://s19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/reno/032010/?action=view¤t=photo-2.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/reno/032010/photo-2.jpg" border="0" height="600" width="400"></a><br />
<br />
The dishwasher is a <a href="http://www.fisherpaykel.com/product/dishwashing/dishwashing/?productuid=8B66FEE4-C6AA-769A-990FF142BBAC7456" target="new">Fisher&Paykel double dishwasher tall tub</a>. Can you marry an appliance? Cause if you can, I might marry this dishwasher.<br />
<a href="http://s19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/reno/032010/?action=view¤t=photo-3.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/reno/032010/photo-3.jpg" border="0" height="600" width="400"></a><br />
<br />
I also ordered a Broan hood fan that should be powerful enough for even my grilling, which can tend towards, um, smoky. What else? A shiny microwave and a garburator that can hide any evidence of aforementioned smoky grilling refuse. <br />
<br />
So that concludes appliance porn.<br />
<br />
Back to the yard!<br />
<br />
The patio pavers are looking very nice.<br />
<a href="http://s19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/reno/032010/?action=view¤t=P1000477.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/reno/032010/P1000477.jpg" border="0" height="400" width="600"></a><br />
<a href="http://s19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/reno/032010/?action=view¤t=P1000478.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/reno/032010/P1000478.jpg" border="0" height="400" width="600"></a><br />

<br />
Lou thinks that he would like a job in the landscaping industry.<br />
<a href="http://s19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/reno/032010/?action=view¤t=P1000482.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/reno/032010/P1000482.jpg" border="0" height="600" width="400"></a><br />

<br />
Wick prefers excavation.<br />

<br />
Oh look, it's <strike>Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum</strike> Lou and Rex.<br />
<a href="http://s19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/reno/032010/?action=view¤t=P1000504.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/reno/032010/P1000504.jpg" border="0" height="400" width="600"></a><br />
Unlike Hank, Stumpy is not staying. Although it *is* kind of a cool old stumpy thing. <br />

The insane sliding door contraption pretty much fell out of the frame last night. Stupid slidy thing.<br />
<a href="http://s19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/reno/032010/?action=view¤t=P1000475.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/reno/032010/P1000475.jpg" border="0" height="600" width=400"></a><br />
<br />
In other news, these pavers and other brick-like things arrived.<br />
<a href="http://s19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/reno/032010/?action=view¤t=P1000464.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/reno/032010/P1000464.jpg" border="0" height="400" width="600"></a><br />
<br />
I think that they must have snuck in through the hole in the fence.<br />
<a href="http://s19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/reno/032010/?action=view¤t=P1000465.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/reno/032010/P1000465.jpg" border="0" height="400" width="600"></a><br />
<br />
Mmm.... latte ....<br />
<a href="http://s19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/reno/032010/?action=view¤t=P1000471.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/reno/032010/P1000471.jpg" border="0" height="400" width="600"></a><br />
<br />
The yard is looking a little, um, rough.<br />
<a href="http://s19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/reno/032010/?action=view¤t=P1000461.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/reno/032010/P1000461.jpg" border="0" height="400" width="600"></a><br />
<br />
<a href="http://s19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/reno/032010/?action=view¤t=P1000473.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/reno/032010/P1000473.jpg" border="0" height="400" width="600"></a><br />
<br />
On the plus side, the landscapers unearthed this lovely rock. I am calling him Hank.<br />
<a href="http://s19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/reno/032010/?action=view¤t=P1000466.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/reno/032010/P1000466.jpg" border="0" height="400" width="600"></a><br />
<br />
Wick approves of Hank.<br />
<a href="http://s19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/reno/032010/?action=view¤t=P1000467.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/reno/032010/P1000467.jpg" border="0" height="400" width="600"></a><br />
<br />
Tomorrow, the steps to the patio will be finished, and the paver weaving will begin.<br />
<a href="http://s19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/reno/032010/?action=view¤t=P1000469.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/reno/032010/P1000469.jpg" border="0" height="400" width="600"></a><br />
<br />
And Rex and Lou vow to continue marking any macho-looking equipment that shows up in the yard.<br />
<a href="http://s19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/reno/032010/?action=view¤t=P1000472.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/reno/032010/P1000472.jpg" border="0" height="400" width="600"></a>Kristihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11610438225632697524noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5441724522262748947.post-39230471187172057402010-03-03T16:33:00.000-08:002010-03-03T16:33:35.439-08:00Then there were two!Today, the second set of french doors were installed.<br />
<a href="http://s19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/reno/032010/?action=view¤t=P1000449.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/reno/032010/P1000449.jpg" border="0" height="400" width="600"></a><br />

<br />
Wick approves.<br />
<a href="http://s19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/reno/032010/?action=view¤t=P1000450.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/reno/032010/P1000450.jpg" border="0" height="400" width="600"></a><br />
<br />
She celebrates by running around like a total goof.<br />
<a href="http://s19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/reno/032010/?action=view¤t=P1000453.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/reno/032010/P1000453.jpg" border="0" height="400" width="600"></a><br />
<br />
Now that the doors are in, the windows can be ordered (reference red lines in yet another stellar architectural rendering).<br />
<a href="http://s19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/reno/032010/?action=view¤t=P1000439.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/reno/032010/P1000439.jpg" border="0" height="400" width="600""></a><br />
<br />
In other news, irrigation trenches were dug for the in-ground sprinkler system! I'll bet you thought Wick made this mess.<br />
<a href="http://s19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/reno/032010/?action=view¤t=P1000445.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/reno/032010/P1000445.jpg" border="0" height="600" width="400"></a><br />
<br />
And there's this lovely pile of gravel in the driveway. Something to do with the irrigation system.<br />
<a href="http://s19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/reno/032010/?action=view¤t=P1000442sq.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/voteforbear/reno/032010/P1000442sq.jpg" border="0" height="400" width="600"></a><br />
<br />
Wick thought these were really big weave poles. It's kinda weird to see PVC used for something besides agility equipment. :-)<br />

Tomorrow, the patio pavers arrive, and the guys are going to start working on that right away - yay!Kristihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11610438225632697524noreply@blogger.com0
